Ocala.com Report on Florida Rescue

July 1, 2009 started like any other day. HECTIC! As I sat down to read my emails for the day I was shocked at what I would read - AGAIN!

12 miniature horses needing immediate rescue almost 2,000 miles away. American Humane had emailed me and asked how I felt about taking in 12 severely neglected minis. Without hesitation, I knew we had to help. After several phone calls, we devised a plan.

Our transporter, coincidentally lived only 10 miles from the horses needing rescue and although it seems he is NEVER home, it turned out something was meant to be because he was home and ready to come my way. I took it as a sign that not only was he home, coming here, but 10 miles away?

The horses had been found by accident by a visitor. They noticed these horses and immediately inquired with the horse breeder owners if they could help them out of a situation they were obviously no longer able to handle. Though things got nasty, they were able to purchase them.We got a vet out to give vaccinations, worm and check the horses. All was set for transport a few days later. These minis were nothing but skin and bones, parasites and worms. Several have horrible teeth from eating dirt and sand and some have very bad foundered feet. In the 12 were 2 studs, a foal and 9 mares. This will take many months of rehab but it is summer here in North Dakota and we are ready. These poor minis had no shelter from the sweltering southern summer heat with a heat index of over 105 degrees and 2 inches of algae on top of their water. They were not being fed but a handful of grain and maybe moldy hay or no hay at all - we are unsure. One is so emaciated that we are unsure at this point if she can make it. There are 9 left on the property that we are still trying to get.

The Arrival

Pictures of the Arrival

The horses arrived July 7th at 4:00 PM and we just weighed, measured, evaluated them and dusted them for lice. Some of the manes were SO tangled and severely matted that we just cut them off. They were also very full of lice. All needed tails cut as they were dragging along the ground. Tomorrow it is feet day. We are just letting them get their feet on solid ground after their 2000 mile trip.

The transporter even got hit by a drunk driver in Tennessee on the way here and his trailer was a bit dented but everyone is ok. There are 8 mares, 2 foals, and 2 stallions.

UPDATE - July 16th

Triple H Was just contacted with great news! 7 of the 9 remaining minis were removed this AM, Thursday July 16. Once again we were asked to take them and we have agreed as the kind purchaser wants them to remain with their herd while they are rehabilitated. 2 of the nine were kept as the purchaser wanted them. We are getting 2 mares and foals and one stud. 2 are still on the property at this time. A gelding and a stud as far as we know. The 5 we are taking are leaving Florida tomorrow and will get their spa day as soon as they have a day or two to rest.

It has been a whirlwind of excitement and WORK! These minis will receive shelter, dental care, foot care, good quality food and love for the first time in their lives. They will remain at the rescue for several months but will be needing homes filled with love. If you have room for one of these little ones please let us know. They will return your love a "thousand" times more.

The money it has taken to get them here and care for them has been draining. If you can help in even the smallest way it is "Very Much" appreciated.

This incredible rescue would not have been possible
without the help of so many wonderful people.

We would like to express our sincere thanks to the following:

They are all wonderful people and have worked so hard on this. Without people and organizations like their's, these minis would not have made it. As you can see, it takes a lot of people to save an animal.
